Brel-Durin

Geography

The Anvil of the North. The mysterious home of the gargoyles is also the most remote and inaccessible kingdom in the Sanctuary. The many entrances to this underground nation are concealed by powers of elemental earth and the only “official” way to enter is through Sky Gate, the gargoyle outpost on Dun-Duagh, the highest peak of the Greater Sanavaar range. From the small outpost of Sky Gate, one begins a harrowing journey into the earth. Several branching tunnels lead to exits dotting the face of Dun Duagh. Some of these exits are benign – others are potentially fatal. Only one passage will lead a traveler into the underground fortress of Threshold. This is normally as far as outsiders are allowed to travel. Threshold is as vast as any city and is also the most racially diverse in Brel-Durin.

Merchants from the outside world throng the wide streets illuminated with torches, magical lights, phosphorescent crystals, as well as natural sunlight, which filters in through cleverly designed vents. Beyond Threshold are the Deeps of Brel-Durin; an unknown number of cities and villages interconnected by a dizzying array of natural caverns. Unlike the Drow, Gargoyles tend to forcibly shape rock only when absolutely necessary. The labyrinthine corridors of Brel-Durin are a natural ecosystem of which the Gargoyles are a living part.

The capital of Brel-Durin is Kulum-en-daril where sits the empty Dolomite Throne. It is from here that the Council of Stone quietly rules. The Council is comprised of nine gargoyles that have been perpetually joined to the last Bloodstone, gift of Forge, and beating heart of gargoyle civilization on Aeryn.

Politics & Population

It is very rare to find representatives of any race other than gargoyles and the occasional Drow in the Deeps. This is not due to gargoyle xenophobia as much as it is a result of the uneasiness felt by most races when kept underground for extended periods of time. Adventurers love to visit the Deeps of Brel-Durin, but few retire there.
